Porsche Cayenne - presentation of the third generation of a sports crossover took place in August 2017 at a special event in Stuttgart. Despite the strong resemblance to the previous iteration, this is a completely new car with seriously changed “stuffing” and settings.
The exterior design of the new Cayenne can be described as "new and at the same time familiar": the same proportions, silhouette, triangular windows in the front doors and neat wheel arches. Interestingly, the wheelbase remained untouched during the change of generations - 2895 mm, but the body became longer by 63 mm (4918 mm), and the roof height was reduced by 9 mm compared to the previous model. The initial tires are now 19-inch: 255/55 ZR 19 in front and 275/50 ZR 19 in the rear, and for the Turbo version, 21-inch tires are already provided in the “base” (285/40 ZR 21 and 315/35 ZR21). Finally, the flagship crossover was the first in its class to get an active rear spoiler that fires at speeds above 160 km / h to increase downforce, and when braking in the range from 270 to 170 km / h, it switches to air brake mode.
The entry-level Cayenne and Cayenne S are offered with spring suspension. Air struts are included in the basic equipment of the Cayenne Turbo (pictured).
The third generation Porsche Cayenne is built on the MLB (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) platform, which also formed the basis Audi Q7 second generation and Bentley Bentayga. The engine was shifted behind the front axle, the rear four-link was replaced with a more compact five-link suspension, single-chamber air struts were replaced with three-chamber ones, the power steering was replaced with an electric booster, and hydromechanical active stabilizers were replaced with electromechanical ones from Schaeffler. All high-tech mechanization of the Cayenne is integrated into the 4D Chassis Control system. The gear ratio is 13:3:1, but an optional rear wheel steering system is available for the model, with which this parameter changes to 12.2:1. As a result, from lock to lock of the steering wheel, you need to make only two turns. It also improves cornering agility and stability when changing lanes at high speeds.
The trunk volume of the Porsche Cayenne has been increased by 100 liters to 770 liters.
Porsche offers three "levels" of the lighting system. By default, every Cayenne comes with LED headlights as standard. An optional next-level system is the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), which has several lighting modes, including cornering and motorway operation. And the most high-tech (and expensive) option is the new matrix LED headlights with PDLS Plus. Thanks to 84 individually controlled LED elements, this system quickly and accurately adjusts the parameters of the light beams so that the Cayenne does not blind the “distant” drivers of oncoming vehicles, and the happy owner of the German crossover does not experience the effect of blinding from road signs.
The interior is conceptually designed in the same style with Porsche Panamera And Panamera Sport Turismo. In front of the driver is a pointer tachometer, flanked by two customizable 7-inch displays. The massive central tunnel between the driver and passenger smoothly turns into an electronics control unit with touch buttons, and then into a 12.3-inch touchscreen of the media complex. Optionally, the model offers a night vision system with an infrared camera, Lane Keeping Assist with traffic sign recognition, as well as adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, Surround View, four-zone climate control, several options seats, a panoramic roof and many combinations of interior trim materials.
The body structure of the third generation Porsche Cayenne combines aluminum and high-strength steel grades. The hood, roof, doors, front fenders, sidewalls, interior floor and suspension mounts are made from “winged metal”. Steel is used in the most critical places - spars, engine shield and roof racks. Thanks to this combination of materials, the body skeleton without external panels and doors "lost" by 22 kg compared to the previous one.
Ground clearance is adjustable from 162 to 245 mm. Cast iron ventilated brake discs are standard, and for an additional fee, Porsche offers carbon-ceramic brakes and PSCB (Porsche Surface Coated Brake) brakes, which are discs with a cast iron base and tungsten carbide coating. A distinctive feature of this option is white calipers.
For Cayenne family cars, Porsche still prefers to install a traditional “automatic” rather than a PDK preselective box. However, in the third generation, the Aisin transmission gave way to ZF products. According to the developers of the crossover, the eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox has a shorter response time and “sporty” gear ratios in the initial gears. Four-wheel drive - with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch for connecting the front wheels. For movement on different surfaces, special modes of operation of the transmission, suspension, locks and stabilization systems are provided: “road”, “gravel”, “dirt”, “sand” and “stones”. They are controlled via the menu of the central touch display.
Over time, diesel and hybrid modifications should appear in the Cayenne line.
